View Full Version : How to see the effectiveness of advertising?

I often wonder if the flyers I give out and place on cars (annoying I know) actually get me more customers. How would one go about seeing if they are really effective? I mean sure you can get some first-hand reviews from other business owners but finding out if it actually works for your business is different. I often just resort to asking new customers where they heard about us. Results show that word-of-mouth is what really gets my business around though. How about you guys?

It is very important that the business owner knows the effectiveness of the various methods of marketing he uses in order to promote his business. The most common way of getting information about this is questioning the customers about the source of their information about the business. Another common method which is also used, include gauging the increase in the level of customers after the introduction of a new media of advertising.

As you probably know, advertising involves a business owner to invest money, which applies to both online and offline businesses. As such, the process of measuring advertising effectiveness can be measured with a simple formula: Return on Investment.

Return on Investment (ROI) evaluates cost against return. Here is the formula:

ROI = (R – CI ) / CI X 100

R = Gross Margin (Sales Revenue-Cost of Good Sold)

CI = Cost of Investment

The result is a ratio; the higher the ratio, the better the return.

I have a great idea to see the effectiveness of advertising. If you are, let's say, a coffee shop, you hand out flyers. On the bottom of the flier, you can write in small letters, "Present this flier to our cafe and you can avail a 10% discount on our products".

This is just a suggestion I can give you. That way, you will see how much your fliers attracted them. I hope you try it out :)

It sure works well with my cafe.

The other posters here are right. You can ask your customers from where they heard about your business or in the case of fliers, like angelicagapit said above, ask them to come in with said fliers if they want to redeem them or take advantage of the offer. Then you'll know. Another way to do this would be by customizing each piece of advertising. Use different phone numbers or e-mail addresses for each campaign. That way you can keep track of where clients come from.

Maybe these methods are not 100% accurate but still, it's better than blind advertising.

Remember that some sites always asked you where you heard about them? That would be one example for them to qualitatively measure the effectiveness of their advertising method. I believe you already got this part correctly; I also usually rely on this method since it is almost effortless. For a more exact quantitative result, the formula given by another posters could be one of the method to have numerical results on your advertisement effectiveness.

Offer a deal if they bring in the flyer with them. That is one way to find out if they work. Maybe put a coupon or first time offer on the flyer. Said, "Bring in this flyer for (fill in the blank)". It is hard to make sure that they work unless either asking your customers directly or having them bring proof of the flyer.

Yeah, its probably a good idea that you try to extract information from your new customers. Your questions should be regarding the customers' source of information regarding the business. This will help you in recognizing the effectiveness of the various advertising methods you have employed currently.

Why not put a special or discount on the flyer for them to bring in then they have two reasons to let you know that it was from the flyer! I have to tell you though 99% of the time these go in the Quick Trip trash for me. I think even though we are in the information stage of life, paper is over used and somedays I think my body will be buried in them. Good luck!!

I wonder about this too sometimes, but I think if you want to know where your customers are coming from specifically without needing to question all of them, then you just have to place it into the mechanics such as having them mention or cut out something from the flyer and offer it to your business in exchange for a discount or a freebie. I think a lot of businesses do it this way so they can have physical evidence on how much they are acquiring new customers as a part of a new campaign and specifically which advertising tool in the campaign is working the best.

Actually you already answered your question. Asking your actual customers about how they were able to find your business is the only good way to find out if your flyers trick is working (simple and costless way too). (It's not like you're operating a website and placed online ads then wonder if it's working or not, it's totally different). :)

That is very true! Discounts are a great idea, but paper is over used, but it will probably change in the future. People are more aware of how wasteful it is. When people hand out fliers so many just get thrown on the ground. Economically, it might help the business, but the waste is ridiculous. I like that there is more mobile coupons from bigger companies. Hopefully smaller companies can use utilize those marketing options in the future.

My local computer repair shop will have discount offers every now again, such as 20% off every item in the shop. The only way a customer is able to get the discount though is to say where they heard about the savings, on the website, on Facebook, by flier, etc.. this is one handy way for just about any company to gauge how effective their advertising is and more importantly the most effective channels.

This is a common ploy which is being used by businesses nowadays in order to gauge the effectiveness of the various advertising mediums they employ. This technique serves two purposes. First being the one which is already mentioned. And the second one is that this also works as a sales promotion ploy and also piques the interest of the customers in the various marketing mediums the company employs.

Keep track of consumer data, sales, page views, etc. Compare in monthly or weekly increments, identifying before/after periods. It may take a while before you see the returns on your advertising efforts.

This is also the way I would do it. It's really hard to see return on a marketing strategy. You really have to compare periods with and without advertising.

It's rather simple to find out if advertising worked. If there's no surge in business after an advertising campaign then quite obviously you'd need to update your advertising tactics.

But not all the time should the effectiveness of the advertising be determined by sales you make. Sometimes you just advertise to let people know your product exists. It gives you a fighting chance if you they come across your product on sale somewhere.

Of course the only way to know that an advertisement is successful is by measuring how much sales it is bring in after using the advertisement. If people respond to it so quickly, then it is a good advertisement strategy but you do not want people to respond and go away also too quickly keep them around for more products to come.

Local advertising do matters a lot in growth of your business as mouth to mouth publicity has its own limitations and once your advertisement gets appreciation it is surely going to attract the crowd which will finally end up in mouth to mouth publicity. The effectiveness of printed advertisement given to a mass crowd cannot be predicted or mad e sure off as there are more chances for people to just ignore those printed advertisement papers. I think by means of direct mail marketing techniques (http://www.troimail.com/services/commercial-print/) you can be sure of the outreach of advertisement as the company who does direct mail marketing is accountable for the delivery of these advertised matter in the form of postcards, flyers, invitation cards, letter heads presentation folders etc.

its depends on what type of marketing you use

Heatherbug
02-27-2016, 06:34 AM
You can track the effectiveness of your campaign several ways. Most have been mentioned here.

1. Get base

Heatherbug
02-27-2016, 07:55 AM
As a small business owner or startup, you want to track everything. Then you can go back and use your business specific information to establish your market trends, plan your marketing strategy to fit your business needs, narrow your market and target specific customers to drive sales and make bigger profits.
1. Establish a base.
Let's say that business picks up at your window washing company naturally in the Spring. It would naturally dwindle in the late fall. Using just the marketing techniques you already have in place online, you can track this as base results monthly, quarterly, yearly.
2. Do market research
Do you really know your customers? What do they really want, what are their fears, and how do they buy? You may think that your customers want or need this, but really, they need that. Talk to your current customers. Question potential customers and get the deep down truth.
Frank of Frank's Plumbing kept lowering prices to attact customers but he didnt realize that the middle class neighborhoods surrounding his business needed more flexible hours and would pay higher prices for it. When Frank listened, he was gaining more customers at higher profits. This is a must for both online and offline advertising.
Suzy couldn't understand why she wasn't getting new customers from her brand new website. She paid alot for it and even more to promote it, but she only saw little traffic. Suzy sells bingo bags. Her target audience generally doesn't look online for that need. Suzy started using print flyers in neighborhoods with a higher population of elderly folks and sales rocketed.
3. Plan to Brand
A customer needs to see your business name 20-30 times or more before it's a "household name". So a smart business owner will use as many media channels as affordable to get their name to the target customers very, very often.
Pete has a carpet cleaning business and has been posting free ads online to attract customers for years. He also has an information only webpage that he built on a free site. A little birdie told Pete to run a small print door hanger campaign every quarter and Qcode to his website. He changed his website to be more functional with a scheduling feature. He also put up a billboard near his business.
He saw remarkable results and Pete actually had a better Return on Investment with his paid ads than the free ones!...His new customers were all within a 15 mile radius of his business, whereas the Craigslist customers were scattered over the county. Pete has saved on travel expenses and had more control over his team now since they are closer.
4. Track results, tweek and repeat.

Many home service business owners, especially start ups, tend to use free online tools and advertising and limit their potential for growth.
Yes, posting a daily or weekly ad on Craigslist will get you a customer or two here or there, but if you ask Frank, Suzy, or Pete you can get more control, better customers and more profits overall if you combine online and offline marketing techniques like the examples above.

1. Set a Clear Goal
2. Track and Measure Results Regularly.
3. Compare Pre and Post Advertising Website Traffic
4. Be Patient: One of the biggest mistakes business owners make in their advertising is expecting instant success. Very often, advertising has a cumulative or delayed effect. Donít pull the plug on your advertising before it has a chance to work.

To be honest, first of all, have you considered other advertising possibilities? As I don't think this one is really effective. But if you still want to stick with it, on the flyers, you can put some QR codes or special links, which could show you how much people actually check out the information in your leaflet and go to the website to book something or to check it out. This won't necessarily mean that they use your services, but it could help you see the traffic and determine if the flyers actually bring you any good or not.

There are different tests and several techniques in each of the test to evaluate advertising effectiveness. Test depends on the aspects to be evaluated. Based on Philip Kotlerís views, let us first discuss classification of tests (various ways or approaches) to evaluate advertising effectiveness.

1. Pre-test and Post Test:

Pre-test implies testing advertising message before it is sent to specific media. Post test implies testing impact of advertising message after it is published in any of the media.

2. Communication and Sales Effect Test:

Communication test measures communicability (ability to communicate) of the message. Whereas sales-effect test measures advertising impact on sales volume.

3. Laboratory and Field Test:

Clearly, a laboratory test is conducted in a controlled environment in a limited scale. Respondents are invited in a laboratory to state their response. Quite opposite, a field test is conducted in original setting, artificial climate is not created. It is similar as conducting survey to measure what customers think about companyís advertisement.

4. Experimental and Survey Test:

Experimental test involves testing advertising effect by conducting test by manipulating independent variable (i.e., advertising efforts) and measuring the effect of the manipulation on other dependent variables like sales, profits, consumer satisfaction, etc. Experimental test may be laboratory or field test. Survey test involved knowing consumersí viewís through a survey method.

5. Message and Media Effect Test:

While message test involves measuring clarity, contents, believability, action ability, etc., of the message, the media test measures effectiveness/ suitability of one or more media.

QR codes, unique URLs and phone numbers are not the best way to determine if a print ad works. Who is going to scan a code in the newspaper? You get the newspaper to NOT use your phone. As for a unique URL, people wonít type that in. They will just google your name. Phone numbers? Do people even use the phone anymore?

For a coupon to work, it better be good. At least 10% off.

The best way is to poll current customers. Give them a checklist: Where have you seen our ads? They can click TV, print, web, radio, etc.

But realize advertising is also branding. They may see your ad and not act for months.

This is an interesting question!
I will give you my real experience. I'm applying SEO and PPC for my newest real estate project called "@CHUNG CƯ GOLDMARK CITY".

The tools i'm using to track the effectiveness of my online marketing campaign are Google Analytics and Google Adwords. I can know my website traffic, my CTR and my customers (who are they? where do they come from? and what they do on my website? and so on...)

And another key is ROI. ROI is Return on Investment. It means that if you invest 10$, you must get 20$.

Hope it helps!

Okay, Can I get a minute from your valuable time?
Something I did 6 months ago and iím still doing now that made me quit my job and stay on my bed, butt naked and work just a few hours a week, itís the best thing iíve ever done in the last 6 months. My first 2 months I made my money back and then I made 4-figures ! I didn't believe it in the first stages just like you. The course is from A to Z, all the secrets will be shown once you get it, you're gonna hear new things that youíve never heard before about getting people to actually buy what youíre providing, and even how to scale your business to make you more money, you want money to work for you right?
After following all the same simple steps that are going to show once you get it, Your profit will be upward of thousands! You donít believe me right? Okay, I'm Jordan and I am an internet marketer who does a lot of things in life including figuring out the whole internet wealth and finding excellent ways to make money with huge commissions and less risk !
And if you are smart enough, which I see because youíre still reading that, You can scale it to 6-figures or more, Yes exactly you could pay off your mortgage.
There are no guarantees in business, but something you have to understand is that i never ask my client to judge me on my winners, i ask them to judge me on my losers because i have so few !
Thanks for your minute and confidence and think deeply about it. If you are interested just comment back, Once you realize whatís going on, itís gonna be an eye opening moment for you!

Find the frequency sweet spot.
You need to track the frequency of your exposure. Advertising effectiveness data helps you find the 'sweet-point' of exposure. This is the perfect number of impressions before an ad has the desired effect, and before over-exposure and fatigue kicks in.

Conduct a reaction where a unique promotional code will be indicated on the flyer. By the number of used promotional codes, you can track the number of attracted people. You can also conduct a survey among your visitors.

It is very important that the business owner knows the effectiveness of the various methods of marketing he uses in order to promote his business. The most common way of getting information about this is questioning the customers about the source of their information about the business.

I have a great idea to see the effectiveness of advertising. If you are, let's say, a coffee shop, you hand out flyers. On the bottom of the flier, you can write in small letters, "Present this flier to our cafe and you can avail a 10% discount on our products".
