Lately I have been considering offline marketing. I have heard of many people using flyers, business cards and so on. I was wondering if anyone else does offline marketing. And if so what methods do you use? and what methods have worked best for you? Also which methods are the most inexpensive?

Offline marketing is generally best, in my opinion, for local businesses. If you're running a global business, then you want global marketing.

A coffee shop or internet cafe, for example, would do minimal online marketing, since most of their business will be produced locally. They would still do some online marketing, though, such as social media sites that cater to the local populace. Facebook, for example, is often a location-based social site. Many friends of many people in an area will also be from that area.

If you're looking at offline marketing for a local business, then the flyers and business cards you mentioned are great ways to go about it. They're rather cheap and still fairly effective, though they cater mainly to the curious that are willing to spend some time looking around. Many people are entirely too busy, or could care less about something on a wall. After all, how could it possibly have anything to do with them? Sometimes you need something that... grabs their attention. A booth in a busy area with attractive posters and a colorful setup is difficult to ignore if you're walking by it. I would attempt to give you some specific ideas, but you haven't mentioned your business.

Other offline advertising might be in support of a group of some sort, such as a school activity, or a contest hosting. I'm sure you've seen those banners inside a local stadium. Even little league teams need funding, and in return for that funding your business can put one of those banners inside the stadium/field there for all to see. The price would depend on the school of course, and the population. The more businesses around, the higher the cost would be of doing that since there're likely others in line for that advertising space.

The best methods for offline marketing aren't going to be the best for every business, as it depends on what type of business you have. If you're inclined to be more specific and have found this post helpful, you're welcome to enlighten us as to what your business is exactly, and I'll be happy to provide more methods for you.

You can try to use T-shirts as walking billboards as they are much inexpensive as compared to the conventional billboards which are really expensive if you consider the amount of money you will be investing in advertising.

I love offline marketing. It's one of the types of marketing that's too underrated in my opinion. This is a good thing for you (and me) in that we have less competition. Too many people only focus on the online world when they forget that most of life actually happens outdoors. Offline marketing is so easy and doesn't take much time either.

Tarpaulins are a really great deal for people because it attracts the attention of most specially when yours is big colorful and presentable. You may also use cardboards and art to present what you are selling.

It really depends on what you are marketing. Flyers and all of that sort of advertising unfortunatey get tossed in the trash, without the recipient even giving it a glance most of the time. If you are offering services to local businesses you may be better off just visiting them in person, because for all you know you may send them a flyer and they may not ever read it and you lost a potential customer because they had no idea what you're offering. If you visit them face to face (if you're offering this type of service) then you can leave them with a flyer or business card so they can get ahold of you.

I do have nice business cards but that's pretty much all I use in terms of offline marketing. I don't really trust flyers very much as they seem to me like just a wasted expense because people usually just ignore them. I think investing in a nice business card is a good move, though, because if your card is memorable enough, then chances are the people you are selling to will remember you when the time comes that they need your product or service. I've already gotten a couple of clients just by my card alone, which I find to be very interesting that it still works in this digital age.

Yes, it's a good idea to advertise your business both online and offline. Some popular methods include flyers, paper and radio ads, billboards, signs or logos printed on t-shirts, matches etc. For starters I think it's a good idea to calculate how much you want to spend on advertising and then compile a list of cheap advertising methods that you'll focus on. What methods are available depends on your area and business type.

Offline advertising l think only works best with certain businesses so for example if you have a website that is about SEO then online advertising will work better than offline and if you have a pet cleaning business then you will want to attract the people in your local area which is where offline advertising comes in. Business cards and flyers can be done so cheaply now from online businesses so it's always worth looking into.

I think that even if you are after a global market that doesn't mean that you can't focus on a local area like the city you live in or your country. Flyers and business cards are ok but not even close to being sufficient. Buying banner ads or ads that show up on billboards can be very effective especially when these ads are in areas with lots of traffic. Focus on regions like markets, schools, stadiums, parks, hotels, malls, etc. You can also pay to place some ads on apartment buildings that are also in very good locations. Organizing enticing contests that offer money and other prizes like vacations, electronic items and such will always get people interested. You can also go from store to store and offer them a monthly rate for putting up an ad for your business. You could donate PC's and other appliances to schools in exchange for the right to do a little advertising in their buildings.

By knowing what will get the attention of the intended demographic, you can get an estimate of costs and conversion rates. For instance, people that are either very young or senior citizens will have use for a smartphone cover with your contact information. However, if you're talking people aged 18-50, there is more likelihood of turning a profit.

Whatever you choose, make sure that it explains what you have to offer. If your business name or logo does not contain this information, it may impossible to place it on cheap pens, mouse pads or other items that are cheap to give away. Functional items complement business cards and they are also more memorable. Drafting the information you want to include on these items is best before placing an order with a promotional products company or making it yourself.

IF you have a local business, they're great! But if you use an online business, they're completely useless.

pdbsales
04-16-2014, 04:50 PM
I'd disagree that if you have an online site it's useless. My experience is that if there's a magazine that suits your demographic, you can get a lot of traction with the right advertisement in it even for your online sites. With one site we worked on, we got 12x the cost of the advertisements after 3 insertions (3 months). Add in the online banner and we were getting a lot of good traffic from that 1 source.

One of the most effective online marketing is to print brochures and keep sending them by post to people who would be interested in your services. You really need to keep talking to other people about your services. Having a brochure in hand helps in many way. Yes, a few of them will chuck it in the trash but a few will keep and come back to it in the future. Next, I would send e-mails to companies and related organizations introducing your services and telling them what you do. I think you can send e-mails to companies without their prior permission but you cannot do the same with private individuals unless they have given you their e-mails with the explicit understanding that you can write to them. Calling companies, organisations and clubs wouldn't be a bad idea. You should straight introduce yourself and tell them about your business. If they are not interested you could ask them who they think you should contact. These are some of the low cost but effective methods.

Another option is to find trade magazines and advertise on them. If you are good at writing you could offer to write a piece for them as well. Some magazines can give you an editorial when you buy advertising from them. This could be effective especially when it is tied with a special offer or event.

Going to promotional meetings and events arranged by other companies may be a good way to show your face and make contact as well. Remember not to be an ass and try to steal business from other people blatantly. Just be nice, sociable and people will ask what you do. If you have money, you could sponsor events as well.

Somehow, if you can make contact with one or two influential people in your line of business this could turn your business around. Generally, ask people to share your contact and be your ambassador.

Basically there are many modes of offline advertising like newspaper ads , ads in local magazines , man distributing paper or small chit in public places , distributing calenders , pen , small diaries , pamphlets , caps , t- shirts and cds. Basically cheapest one is distributing pamphlets with pen. If we will order in bulk the the costing can be less. we can negotiate with advertising agency. If any businessmen is planning to promote his products or services then the best option is distributing pamphlets in public place with one ball pen.

Thanks

There's tons of stuff you can do for offline marketing and then direct them to your website or blog. You could even walk around with a
cardboard box on your head with the url of your website!

You can set up alliances with non-competing but complimentary business, radio ads, tv, papers, magazines, leaflets left in pubs, direct mail, postcards.

All work if done properly and given time to test. The most important is to test. Headlines, colours, copy, product delivery, buying process (send a coupon back or online store etc), payment process (cheques or only credit cards etc), price points, white space, images (or not.) etc, etc.

Test one thing at a time and don't spend all your money at once :) Sometimes, your market will like direct mail long sales letters or they might like postcards. You have to test and see what works for your ideal customers.

This brings me on to actually surveying your current customers and see what they want or what they would react to best. You could email them and send them to a Google doc to answer questions.

The email could be...

asking them as customers how they would feel about having product offers on the radio or direct mail - long short etc so we can further serve you exactly how
you want to be looked after...

The answers will give you a good starting point to get a control piece set up. Then send them that.

This will be cheap (if you know copywriting!) and then you can roll it out offline with a bit of money. Then scale up when you have a winner. Then keep on testing to get even better results!

I would really like to help you with your query...You know, sometimes people just don't know their audience and where their customers are. Sometimes they don't know what type of advertising campaign would work for them better. So it's all about testing and testing... But you should understand what type of campaign you need: display, or search, or social media, or mobile, or everything :). Do you want to pay for clicks, impressions or downloads? Understanding of these peculiarities will help you to spend your marketing budget wisely. At GothamAds we feel our partners. Our advertisers can start running their ad campaigns with $100 and add more if they like. They can also manage campaign themselves or get a dedicated campaign manager.

I think if you are a local business, offline marketing is an awesome way to engage with your community. Offline marketing still works. The trick is to get both online and offline campaign working together. One example we used is sending postcards with voucher or coupon though direct mail. When they come to the store with the voucher, we ask them politely to enter their email addresses which we use for our online campaign.

However, I believe that it depends on the kind of business that you have. What's important is to track which one converts. You may have gathered a lot of likes and inquiries on Facebook, but do they convert? My suggestion is to try anything within your budget and track the result.

I agree. Cross business promotion works as well. I have a client who does this. Her salon business do so well by working with other local businesses like dentists and doctors clinics. They trade their coupons by giving their customers something free so they can say: Hey, thanks for being a great customer, here's something free from Cherie's salon to say thanks!" Much cheaper than paying for someone to build you a website or manage your online campaign.

LOCAL MEDIA ADVERTISING

Advertising on both television and radio is still very effective in creating brand awareness. By promoting your company via an entertaining and unique advertisement that will leave an impression in the mind of your target audience while inserting your brand in a subtle way can often be more valuable than that of some online methods. This can be achieved by including a catchy jingle, slogan or image that encompasses your brand. The mobile network, Three, have been very successful in creating attention grabbing advertisements for their services that get audiences discussing their brand.

COLD CALLING

Cold calling potential clients can still prove to work for many businesses. The advantage this form of offline marketing provides is that you can ensure that you are targeting the right people for your product and service offering. It cuts out time spent on audiences that might not necessarily be the right clients and lets you get straight to targeting those who are.

NETWORKING

There is nothing more effective for building long lasting, genuine relationships with current and potential clients then face-to-face interaction. Whether that is achieved through appearances at networking events, conferences, trade shows or customer evenings. It is one of the most personable ways of building brand loyalty. Networking events also provide a perfect opportunity for exchanging business cards and giving away free branded items such as t-shirts, pens, key chains etc.

VISUAL PRINT MARKETING

It’s important to remain visible both online and offline. For this reason, using print marketing in newspapers and magazines gives your target audience a physical reminder of your brand. If you are a business that is adopting a mixture of both online and offline methods, ensure to include contact information for both to give your audience the opportunity to interact with you via a medium that suits them best. Another form of visual marketing that can prove to be efficient are eye catching signs such as banners or vehicle wrapping that match your business’ unique selling point. These provide other ways in which your audience can hear your marketing message.

It is important to remember that it is possible to track how well your offline marketing techniques are performing using online tools. By using specific URLs, they can enable the tracking of offline interaction through the use of web analytics.

Here at evolve, we can advise you on which offline marketing techniques are best for promoting your business’ unique selling point, creating brand awareness and targeting your current and potential audiences.

Use magnetic signs (http://stickerz.com/product/magnetic-vehicle-signs/) or cheap vinyl lettering (http://stickerz.com/product/premium-vinyl-graphics-8-yr/). Imagine you’re in traffic in a busy city and you’re passing and being passed. It only takes a few passes before you start recognizing the other cars and remembering when they passed you and you passed them. You’re building recognition, right there in traffic with dozens of other drivers. Car signs (including magnets, vinyl lettering printing, perforated window decals, etc) really turn your vehicle into a mobile advertising everywhere you go.

The best thing to do is to test your marketing message online first. Test your headlines, sub-headlines, and ad body content. Testing online will enable you to fail fast. After you craft your marketing message online you can take it offline using your winning headlines, sub-headlines, and ad body content. Use the conversion equation to craft your ads.

The Conversion Equation...
1. Interrupt
2. Engage
3. Educate
4. Offer

The Interrupt is your headline. What you say to grab the prospect's attention.
The Engage is the sub-headline. What you say to get the reader to read further into the ad.
The educate is what you say in the ad body content.
Finally, the offer should be so good that people would be idiots not to take you up on your offer.

It's becoming quite rare for businesses to use offline marketing. But it still exists and continues to work.
Some of the best ways would be advertising using tarpaulins, posters and flyers.
The printing isn't that expensive compared to billboards, radio or even television ads.
Business cards would be nice too but if you have products as to services then it would be enticing enough if there's images on it.
I think it goes without saying that word of mouth is one advertising tool that can be of an advantage to the business.
So make sure that services/products are beyond the expectation of the customer so that they'll happily suggest it to others. :)

Yes offline advertising is the good idea especially for starters. Some example like offline marketing flyers, paper, radio ads, billboards, signs or logos printed on t-shirts, ads on bike matches etc.. These are very helpful in offline marketing

It also depends on your target group. There are still a lot of people, who are not online, e. g. older people. If you want to reach out for them, offline advertising like flyers will be much more effective than any online ads.

I know this post is from a long time ago, but I think it's really refreshing to see businesses reverting back to offline marketing. I'm not a fan of billboards or anything like that, but I love seeing a company get out there and mesh with it's customers. I agree that local businesses will have more luck with this sort of thing, but get involved in the community, earn some local news coverage through charity work or doing good in your community. I think that's the best way to earn loyal and happy customers. Also - let yourself be known. If you are a local small business owner - let people get to know you. If you're a familiar face, you'll automatically increase business and it will impact not only your bottom line, but also your online media presence.

Yes i agree with you that local signage plays a crucial role in bringing local customers to your shop/store and make you a local brand. I have tried several offline techniques but 2 were highly effective "outdoor banner advertisement" and 2nd one was Vehicle graphics campaigns. Both generated awarness about my business and generating a local customer base. You can use both vehicle graph "vehicle decals" "vehicle wraps". Both are highly effective and mainly save your big bucks! Other approaches you have listed here might not bring that much results or may be i dont have used them.

Live, personal demos and consultations provide a direct connection with customers. As a result, they are one of the most effective bottom-of-the-funnel tools — of anykind. For the first time, a prospect can directly experience the firm’s expertise and/or product. But these activities work best when they are set up by prior marketing interactions. Often, personal interaction with clients and a live demo or free consultation provides the extra confidence a buyer needs to request a proposal and move forward toward a contract.

If you have a local business then offline marketing is also important to use. Because your potential customers are mostly people who live nearby. That's why it's important to introduce your business to them. This can be done through billboards, city lights, flyers, and other outdoor advertising. You can also order radio advertising at the nearest supermarket. Or negotiate with other businesses on mutually beneficial terms.

For example, if you have a flower shop, you arrange with the nearest restaurant that you will decorate their tables with bouquets in your branded vases and with business cards nearby. And it is profitable for you because you have advertising, and it is profitable for the restaurant because their interior has become better looking.

You can come up with many ideas.

Offline advertising, sometimes referred to as ''traditional advertising,'' relies on the following channels to get marketing messages out to a target audience:

Television
Print (magazines or newspapers)
Radio
Billboards
Marketing collateral (brochures and flyers)
Direct mail
Some people believe offline advertising has been written off thanks in part to the advances in technology that brought us online advertising, but that is simply not the case. Brands and businesses the world over are still running ads in daily newspapers. We still pass billboards as we drive to and from work. And the market for television ads has never been higher (just ask advertisers during the Super Bowl).
Offline advertising targets consumers through channels that are considered more traditional, such as newspaper ads for local restaurants, radio spots purchased by car dealerships, and direct mail, like mailing coupons and flyers to consumers' homes.
