Hello,

I'm an MBA student doing on my dissertation on the most effective techniques used by SMEs nowadays for marketing the actual organization and the products.
Could you please identify me the marketing methods that you consider the most important for today's SMES and maybe any issues that might prevent the effective implementation of those methods?

Thank you in advance!

The most important sem marketing method is first delivering the RIGHT customer to the site. You could put pictures of Paris Hilton on your site but if she doesn't have anything to do with your products you as just going to generate a ton of usless traffic. So, everything to do with the site has the end customer in mind. The second challenge after getting them to the site is to move them to your products. Again, everything from design to product information has to be done just right are there is little success. And last but not least, the third step is to not only ask but get the order as well.

The issues that prevent this... ? An IT department that is inexperienced in how design and marketing work in the internet environment.

Good day --

Before you do any marketing, you must have a top-notch product and quality support. The former reduces the strain on the latter. But, does not lessen the latters importance. I always stress to my clients that their support team assist a customer with any issue they may have (within reason) whether it is related to the product or not.

Once that is in place, it really becomes a decision on how to split the budget amongst the initiatives that are available to the particular type of business. These could include sponsorships, banner ads, cost per click campaigns, affiliate programs, traffic exchanges, traditional advertising, networking, word of mouth/grassroots campaigns, etc.

Cheers,
Bob

Sorry to reply so late but I just joined the forum so I hope this will help you on time for your paper.

I think the marketing method that is most important for SME today is combination marketing method. Traditionally, SME businesses are used to focusing on one medium - print or radio or television advertisements as a mean to advertise. Today, you need to use more than one medium and that should include internet, print, face-to-face and business cards at the same time.

The obstacles in implementing this sort of strategy is that people can't get past the traditional focused marketing strategy of using only one medium at a time and secondly, people think more expensive is better. In the case of today where the media landscape is so cluttered, creativity will give you an edge and this does not require huge amount of money.

Investing time and not money; and frequency in advertisement should be the new principles for SME.

Hope this help.

If you've found out ways to handle the spam busters, and there's a wow thing in your offering, and you're game for social media, digital marketing can really make that life-critical difference to your business. The one other prerequisite is availability of the product or a sample on some virtual marketplace. Next, if your communication has been designed well, you can really win rapid visibility, without the danger of being swatted away as just another product. You can really snipe at a very niche target audience through online modes. The biggest advantage is costs, which, either you don't incur at all for some time, and in the later stages of your marketing program, if you do have to, it's peanuts compared to the conventional media. Thanks for the A2A!!

SMEs have a different kind of requirement; they have done some kind of marketing in either online or offline space or both. They have very specific goals, well defined goals rather. And they have short term and long term targets to achieve. Some of the SMEs or SMBs have in-house marketing and design/development team as well.

After working for many of the SMEs we have found something common in them and based on that we have prepared a dedicated team and a common strategy. The final marketing plan is decided only after reviewing their business and their targets, however.

Marketing is an inextricable part of the business world. While traditional methods will retain some value in commerce, digital marketing is now paramount to a company’s success. Though seemingly more complex than traditional methods, digital marketing is low risk and low cost—you just need to know what you’re doing.

Larger corporations are quick to pounce on every new digital marketing trend, and they have the capital to dedicate specialized employees or even entire teams to pursuing new digital marketing methods. Small to medium enterprises (SMEs) typically don’t have this kind of flexibility. However, that doesn’t exclude them from the digital marketing game. In fact, SMEs stand to see noticeable returns on their investments in digital marketing.
Advertising is certainly a major part of the marketing realm, but marketing entails much more than ad placement. Digital marketing is a valuable asset for SMEs if they take the time to engage their customer base from every possible angle. Think of this as a three-pronged approach to paid, owned, and earned marketing.

Paid marketing is just that—marketing you pay to place. Advertising is crucial, but you need to be sure you’re reaching your target audience. Careful search engine optimization will ensure that your brand is a top search result for keywords relevant to your business. Pay-per-click advertising is another way to pay for better search result presence.

Owned marketing revolves around your company’s digital properties that drive business—namely, your website and social media profiles.

Finally, earned marketing is the visibility your brand receives from customer interactions. Product and service reviews are fantastic earned marketing—by allowing customers to share their thoughts about your brand, those ideas will resonate within their social circles. Word-of-mouth advertising is invaluable. Customers are far more likely to take the plunge on a new brand if they hear or see a solid recommendation from a trusted source.

A2A. First establish your target market in the sense of B2B(Business to business) or B2C(Business to consumer) as these 2 markets make a huge difference to what you use for marketing.

B2B usually is limited within a limited market spread. What I mean by this is that you will not get same amount of customer attention when promoting directly to public. You have to focus on media platforms that other businesses use to source suppliers.(www.linkedin.com)

B2C has wide spread variety you can use, from popular social media platforms all the way to Youtube videos advertisements.

I would suggest to start by creating a possitive website, which is easy to use and understand, with a straight to the point message from your homepage. Thereafter you can invest in Google adwords to get your exposure, and clients can find you when they are looking for your product or service.

LinkedIn is also very powerful but have a stronger presence within the business market. Your typical consumer market focusses on social media which they use everyday, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram(to name a few). Social media advertisements can take a while, but your brand awareness is growing stronger and the consumer will notice it and keep it his subconscious mind.

The key to all of this is persistence and repetition.
