With all the talk of the downturn in Facebook organic reach is it still a viable marketing tool for home based businesses?

I think having a FB page for your business is important for several reasons.

Having a facebook page is a very effective strategy for home business and there are millions of users in FB so you'll have a better chance to be seen. Also, try to be creative on the stuffs you put into your FB page so that more people will caught their attention towards your business. ;)

I don't agree with these generic answers you are getting. How valuable Facebook is depends upon the type of business you have and the amount of time it takes to maintain it. Even if it works, the investment might be too large for the return. Make sure you get what you pay for. Second thing is that facebook is all about interesting relationships and ideas. You have to have a category that is fun and shareable. For example, using Facebook to promote a funeral home or a car wash is perhaps not the best use of time.

That's the only answer that makes sense and adds value to this conversation. It always depends on what kind of business your running because it determines what kind of customer group your targeting and this determines which social media to focus on. Facebook targets different kind of online activity than LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest. etc. so you must determine what you're aiming at.

well, thats your choice. thats one advantage owning a business, you decide your own path.
but i advice you to think again, because I believe that regardless what business you have, it is essential to be in the same place where your customers are.
scott also has his point, but i could not totally agree on that. Facebook is not just about fun, i think there are more people who use it because they need it.
so regardless of what you are selling, if its USEFUL then people would go for it. then having a Facebook for your business is important.
look at this page https://www.facebook.com/WilliamsFuneralHome, may I ask, how many likes does it have?
