Joining the chamber will be a great move for you get to net work with other business owners as well as get to know them on a personal level. See if you can find a BNI network. They are your best bet for business.

I second the BNI comment. I joined a BNI group on my area and it has helped grow my business.

Excellent Idea! Having once held an office with our local chamber, I was always impressed by the business people from other areas that showed up to our chambers special events. Great way to spread the word and honestly do some good for your hometown.

BNI and Chamber are both great ways to grow your business but allow me to add this caveat.

Don't go into it with the idea of tryin to sell the other members. Go into it with the concept of asking those people for referrals. By asking for referalls you not only disarm the other members and lower their (OH MY GOD THEIR GONNA TRY AND SELL ME SOMETHING) shield, but you elevate them to a position where they can help you. People are naturally helpful. Additionally, if they are in the market for what it is you sell, then they will be happy to refer themselves.

And, if you do join BNI, really take the training and get involved. Sub often at other chapters. I've grown my business tremendously just by meeting more people and going to more chapters. In the training you really learn how to market yourself to others and how to use BNI to it's fullest capacity.

It's a great organization and I highly recommend it.

I agree that your local Chamber of Commerce and BNI offer excellent networking and learning opportunities for you and your business. In addition to the comments given above, I would suggest that you could offer to sponsor or co-sponsor an event for either of these groups. This would give your company plenty of exposure, while not looking like a solicitation session. In other words you would be giving before you start asking for anything. Of course it would give you a good excuse to contact local business owners before the event (particularly people you might have met once or twice) and remind them that it's happening and that you hope to see them there.

Chambers of commerce are associations of those businesses which are part of a similar industry. I would highly recommend you to join your local chambers of commerce as it would allow you excellent opportunities for learning and networking. These commerce also lobby with regards to policy matters. They also provide a lot of exposure for your business.

I'm glad this question was asked. My husband and I own our own plumbing company and I had been debating if joining the Chamber of Commerce was worth it or not. I finally decided (last Friday, actually) that it can't hurt. It isn't expensive and it looks good to prospective customers to have that "label" on your website: "Member of Millbrook Chamber of Commerce."

I do like the idea that you can network with other business owners, as mentioned above, also. It just seems like a good cost effective way to Image Boost and advertise.

I had not heard of BNI before reading this thread, though. I am definitely going to look into that. Thanks to all for mentioning it. :)

A Chamber of Commerce is a private, non-profit, usually a 501(6)6 membership organization in the US, existing for that betterment of business environment. Members are usually comprised of businesses in the locale of each chamber of commerce, associate members(people who are associated with a business that is a member, i.e. real estate agents, bankers, insurance agents) and individual members (interested people). The organizations elects a board of directors who set policy and develop a program of work or work plan and board hires an Executive or CEO who hires staff and together with board and member committees enacts the programs and policies. The committees help with work in various areas of set priorities to serve the entire membership and at times the community-at-large. Usually committees are standing, and there are also “ad hoc”committees or teams set up for short term projects. Typical standing committees are Governmental Affairs, Business Improvement, Ambassadors, Event Management, Economic Development, Fundraising, Membership, Etc.

There are local, state, and the U.S. Chambers of Commerce’s. Members pay fees to fund their work and they benefit from the business advancement of the organization, business referrals, advertising, networking, business to business opportunities, business seminars, events and many other benefits.

There is much more available if you do a search on your search engine. I’m running out of battery in my ipad and not near the charger.

I was a Chamber Executive Director for ten years in Florida.

Despite common misconceptions, a Chamber of Commerce is more akin to a fraternal organization; in most cases, a Chamber of Commerce does not receive public or governmental funding – a large majority of Chambers of Commerce is existing today survive as a result of donations and membership dues.

When you join a chamber of commerce, you automatically get added to their online business directory under your business category. You generally get to put the contact information for your business along with a short description and a link to your website into your chamber profile.

As shown above, the Chamber organizes trade fairs several times in a year. Businesses that would like to attend such events to promote their products and services are required to pay fees. The moment they do that, the Chamber makes money.
