Hi everyone,

I help run a specialty store and am looking for ways to reach more people, online and outside the Internet.

I already have a steady yet small customer base, and I am looking for methods and places to find new customers. Does anybody have any ideas that has worked for them in the past? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hello Mark,
Here are a few good free ways to increase salese.

- Add your products to Froogle
- Add your products to mall sites such as bizrates and mysimon
- Sell on eBay. Use a reserve price and list your website on the auction pages.
- See if some sword-related newsletters will let you post free advertising on their mails.
- Exchange links with other sword related websites (not competitors).
- Post in sword-enthusiast forums and post your website as signature. Encourage group-buys in such forums.
- Write articles related to your products (sword manipulation tips?) and submit them to related ezines and other web sites.

If you don't have a blog, I would consider starting one. Update often and relate the content to the swords you are selling.

Thank you all so much for all the great input thus far. I've actually been able to implement some of your ideas, and I'm happy to report that I've seen substantial sales increases in the past month alone!

My question today is this: How are you all managing your marketing efforts going into the holiday season? Everything seems to want to slow down these days, and I'm curious as to some of the ways that you're dealing with the slowdown. Or, perhaps you aren't experiencing a slowdown at all? Add your business to citation websites. It will probably help you get leans from local market. Open a social media account and build targetted followers. Promote your products there from time to time.

I had the same problem last year. After some research, I found a new way to promote my business. The product is AdBicy and it's a mobile and modular billboard carried by a bike.
For me it was very helpful and I can use it every year.

I agree. Strongly.

Start a blog where you write about the products you offer and how people use them. Then later when enough traffic shows up, you may be able to install a shopping cart system on your site and give up less money in each transaction.

You have to look at your budget to see what kind of paid marketing you want to do (PPV, PPC, Facebook Ads, etc...). In addition, you'll want to establish a presence in social media.

- Are you running any pay-per-click ads?
- Do you offer coupons?
- Do you have a mobile advertising/check-in program?
- What do your current customers love about your product?
- Do you have a referral program? You can offer them discounts if they refer a friend...
- How are you currently tracking you online traffic sources and volume?

It's slightly more unusual but I have had great success in the past using custom condoms (https://customcondoms.co.uk) to promote my business. Get your company logo printed onto a condom packet and use it as a freebie at events, exhibitions etc. Really depends on what your business is as to whether it will work for you but it certainly can!

Hey Mark and others,

The best way to get a business off the ground or grow it is with direct marketing principles, not so much branding in the beginning.

What I would do is this:

1. Use social media (specifically paid if you can afford it - like Facebook Ads) to get traffic and drive that traffic to
2. A simple one or two page website (which you can building using clickfunnels or another website/funnel builder) On this page collect their email in exchange for something of value. on the second page once they opt in incentivize them to buy now on that page with another offer (50% off for a limited time, etc.)
3. Using an email auto responder software like Aweber follow up with them via email with value packet content, while slipping in a few offers here and there.

i run a direct response digital marketing agency out of Seattle Wa, and I have seen this method double my clients business within 30 days REGULARLY ... It's powerful.

The type of products you choose to sell will affect who you appeal to:

Are you going to focus on organic or locally grown food, or is this not particularly important for you or your customers?
Are you going to sell fruit and vegetables? Exotic produce? Hard-to-find ingredients that your customers are struggling to buy elsewhere?
Are you going to sell your products by weight, so that customers can buy as much or as little as they want?
Price
A product is only worth what a customer is prepared to pay for it. You don't necessarily have to sell the cheapest food in the area, but the price does need to be competitive. In most cases food co-ops are set up to try to provide food at a more affordable price than other local outlets, so many set their prices by making sure they are lower than the local supermarket. However, it is also very important to make sure you are covering all your costs. Work out your prices carefully by calculating your costs first (for example rent, bags, petrol, and buying food). Some food co-ops add little or no mark-up to the cost price to make their products as cheap as possible.

Place
To reach as many customers as possible the premises where you sell your goods must be appropriate and convenient for your target group. For example, if you are trying to appeal to older people it may be easier to deliver bags or run a stall at a sheltered housing scheme, whereas if you are trying to target families it may be more convenient to have a stall or drop-off point at a school or children's centre (see the Premises section for more information).

Promotion
You can promote your food co-op in lots of different ways. You could produce leaflets and posters, send out press releases, set up a website, have a big launch event, or run a special introductory offer.
