Hello - I have been having a look through the posts in this forum for a couple of hours now and was struck by the number of small business owners wanting to promote their business for little or no money.

I just wanted to share my own experiences of marketing because like many of the owners who've posted a question, when I first started out, I spent loads on marketing my business, for little or no response and was left feeling completely demoralised.

So, I came to the conclusion that if I really understood my customers - identified who they were and where they would be likely to go and promoted in those places, then I would be more likely to be successful.

By taking time out to narrow down my customer base, I came up with about 70 different methods of marketing (all tailored to my business) that were all low cost or free to do. I try about 10 a month now and test whether or not they work - and I've had some great results, all without spending a penny.

I've since written a short e-book on how to do this called "What successful small businesses do that the unsuccessful ones don't". I'm happy to send this across to anyone who wants it. Please email me (see my profile for details) if you would like a copy.

Very good to see someone really getting to understand their customers. I think it is something a lot of business owners forget. They tend to act like they are everything and the customers should adapt to their vision and way of thinking but that's not how it works. Customers are everything for your business and you should act that way. The customer is always right.

Fiding good, loyal customers is the best way to go. Just wondering, is the ebook free? It sounds interesting.

This sounds like a very useful e-book to read. The more you can narrow things down the less money you have to spend in advertising, that way you can have room for more profits. I'm going to send you an email because I want a copy. Once I'm done reading it I'll post a review of what I though about your e-book, thanks!

I would like to thank you for taking the time to make this post and share your valuable experiences with us. It is good that you followed the most important of business, i.e., Customer is reason due to which businesses exist. And you tried to understand his behavior in order to make your business more successful. Sometimes while conducting a marketing exercise, businesses tend to forget about their customers which makes them unsuccessful.

Thanks for offering your knowledge on marketing! It's true that the best kind of knowledge comes from the knowledge obtained by someone who has experienced this kind of field hands-on. With your experience, I really believe you can give us some really good advice with your e-book.

Hopefully your e-book is free. I'd really want a copy of it.

Helen's post is a great example of low cost marketing efforts to targeted customers. I looked at her web site and she is focused on small business marketing support. So far she has gotten some 20,000 views of this post and who knows how many requests for her ebook. Nice work Helen. Notice also that even though she does local marketing consulting in the UK her post is global. That is not very good targeting BUT it cost her nothing to extend her marketing globally so even though that part has marginal value it is also marginal cost.

When you are starting a new business you usually have very little money and way too much time (for lack of customers). In reality your marketing efforts at this stage are cheap only because you value your time as cheap. Your marketing efforts need to be things than consume your time and not your dollars. Once you get your business flowing you will value your time more and you will get to the point where you labor based efforts are costing you a lot. At that point you will start looking for methods that spend more money and less of your time.

Please note what I have said....I never said there are cheap marketing methods that you can purchase. There is in general no such thing. Don't bother looking for it. The trade off will always be your labor vs paying. Anything outsourced is not going to be cheap. This is called the law of supply and demand.

Understanding the needs and the requirements of the customers is all necessary for a business. So, the first step is to know the complete details about the customers and then moving on with it. Business do not stop with just providing the needed ones but it also continues in editing or modifying the products or the services after being send or delivered to the clients.

I had a great experience in the field of marketing. Internet is the most effective method for marketing. We can easily get in touch with the targeted customer. The ways that I preferd were social bookmarking, blogging, and email marketing.

@hdowling: I completely agree with your point of advertisement. The best way to promote your business is to target correct audience and explain your services to them. It sounds good that you have written a book and that's really great if are helping others.. Good job!

My experience isn't that great. I remember after reading some articles about SEO I decided to promote my stuff on my own. But now I understand that it would've been better if I'd hired specialists from Operatio Marketing (https://www.operatiomarketing.com/) right after I was advised to. No, I decided that I'm the cleverest one and I can conduct marketing myself. Mistake, huge mistake.

Experience marketing, also referred to as “experiential marketing,” is a strategy that uses in-person events to promote products. ... They are designed to allow prospects to familiarize themselves with a product before purchasing it.
