Getting into the Medical Marijuana industry
20 states have legalized medical marijuana and many more states are putting it on the ballot this year, my state being one of them. I want to get into the industry and be the first one. In my small town there's not much room for competition, especially with such a controversial product, not to mention I'm in the deep south or "bible belt" as it's often referred to. I want to open a dispensary in the event the law is passed but I don't even know where to begin. There is too much information online and most of it is state specific. Would a doctor or medical professional have any good advice? Who else would?

If and when your state start to permit medical marijuana, you should start by contacting the government authority that licences vendors to find out exactly what you are allowed to do and not do in terms of selling and promoting the stuff. Find out too if you need to undergo any checks to get a licence. You would presumably be allowed to open a storefront dispensary, and perhaps you could also look into the possibility of doing mail order since you say you live in a conservative community.

I'm sure some doctors (as long as they are open-minded about medical MJ) would be able to give you advice, especially if they deal with patients who have cancer and other serious diseases that cause a lot of pain. There are also specialist pain clinics, alternative medicine practitioners like herbalists and acupuncturists who could advise you and maybe refer people to you.

Medical marijuana is good for those that are terribly in worst health conditions. Although I don't think Marijuana should be legalized in order for the distribution of Medical Marijuana. I think an amendment or a law would suffice permitting people who suffer from severe diseases can apply for it.

I have wondered what the qualifications for opening up a medical marijuana dispensary. It's legal in my state. I live within walking distance of two dispensaries. In fact, there are just too many dispensaries in the city. Plus there are private parties that are allowed to grow their own plants. There were three competing propositions on the ballot to limit the number of dispensaries last year. One did past. For the record, I'm not against medical marijuana.

I have a hard time believing that a "Bible Belt" state would legalize marijuana. If it does, it's a good idea to be one of the first to adopt. The regulations would vary state to state since marijuana is still illegal on a federal level.

I'm in Florida and its coming up on our ballot. Senators from Alabama and Georgia that have hard stances against medical marijuana are speaking up about the positives and health benefits.
I already have a liquor license for my pool side daiquiri/snack bars that requires a back ground check so rigorous that I can bypass TSA when flying! I just want to be ahead of the game if/when it passes.

This sound like a very good idea! Knowing just how popular MJ is worldwide you can't go wrong in this business once legalized.

Still, be very very careful and make absolutely sure you have a crystal clear idea of how to proceed. Go to the the police, lawyers, mayor and anyone you have access to and sits on a position of power and ask them questions about this. What they think about it, how and what should you do.

I'm not from the States but I've read a few horror stories where some dispensaries were shut down and the owner jailed even it was legal in that state to grow and sell. In this example the problem was that while legal in that state it wasn't legal in the USA as a whole and they used that as ground for prosecution, or something like that. Now, this was a year or two ago and since then things have evolved nicely towards legalization, but please, ask around just to be safe.

I think it's an industry to definitely look into. Especially now since a lot of states are legalizing marijuana and many are still considering legalizing.

Good luck, I hope your ready for a lot of paperwork. To open something like that you better have a spotless background and a lot of powerful friends.

I'd mostly be careful with the detail that this might still not be legal on a federal level and consider that the most when making a decision. If after that you still want to pursue it, I'd personally just treat it just as I would treat any business venture which is to do so as objectively as possible and stick to the basics and start from there. In this case, I'd figure out how to grow the best product first and then figure out what it takes to build a retail store around it. After that, I'd start crunching the numbers and the timeline when I've got all the timing of growing and the quantities down, how much I would sell it for, and how long it will take for all of my investment to come back in a worst case scenario, etc.

I know few families who decided to move to California because of legal cannabis. I also know some guys who order medical cannabis straight from Canada, I would move to Canada for that reason, too.
