It always pleases me to see people heed advice. It is possible to still keep checking the domain name for availability and if you get it, redirect the domain you have registered to that other one if you so please.

You could diversify you domain name with .org, .net, .cc and other suffixes but having the same website name. Instead of waiting for it to expire and then finding out that the site is still being processed and or the site was redeemed by the previous owner which will cause you headaches, you should diversify the suffixes or just choose another name which may be similar to it.

Do you know the exact date of expiring that domain? If yes, then after that you can definitely get that domain name, but if you don't know, you will have to wait for at least 2014 end.

As for me, it's not a good idea to wait till it expires, as it isn't the fact that you will be the first who buys it.

At the time of domain name purchase the expiration date should also be allotted and if the expiration date you had forget and didn't renewed it then at that situation your account get sustain and you have to renew it again by going in the setting of the hosting provider that you had used for your web site domain.

From my experience it is quite unlikely that you will get the domain when it expires. Why not get in touch with the owner and ask what they want for the domain. You may be able to pick it up reasonably cheap. Alternatively, as some of the other posters have said, why not just go for a slightly different domain name.
