    Question on Grants
I was wondering if anyone has ever done business with a place called Government Grants Web. My associate and I are trying to start up a private, non-profit research facility in south Mississippi to research alternative energy power sources, storage devices, etc. We are looking for grants for building modification and research. We are currently in the process of getting our 501(c)(3) status from the IRS, however, that could take months, and we want to begin as soon as possible. I found governmentgrantsweb.com a couple of weeks ago, and they take our information, submit it to a grants advisor, and then, for a fee, will help us through the paperwork of applying for governemnt grants. They "guarantee" that we will get a grant, or else the $298.00 is supposedly fully refundable. If anyone has any information on this company, whether it is reputable or not, I would appreciate the info. Thanks.

Why not ask them what the 'source' of the government grant actually is (eg: which department or whatever)? If they are legit, I don't see why they wouldn't tell you.

Then call that source directly, and ask them what they think of the provider in question.

You may not get all the answers you want... but you may get some.

Obviously they wouldn't tell you because there'd be no reason for you to pay them the $298 for the information. Telling you the source of the grant is how they make their money. And even if you did get the name of the source without paying, you wouldn't be able to check the veracity of the governmentgrantsweb people with the source of the grant.

But I'm very interested to hear what the original poster did. Did you follow through with the governmentgrantsweb people? Did you get the info you wanted? Or, if not, did you get your money back?

After much debating, I decided to go ahead and order the package. When it arrived, I was not impressed. Basically it was the CFDA on a disk, and an application form was included in hard copy. I called the toll-free number for the company, and although sometimes it is difficult to get a real person on the line, I was finally able to talk to a gentleman, and I explained to him exactly what we were trying to do, (which is get start-up grants to revitialize a building into a scientific research facility to study alternative energy power sources, photovoltaics, etc.) and he requested that I fax our basic break down of our proposed start-up costs to him. He would then take these figures, and consult with some other specialists in his office, and let us know what would be the best route to go. I faxed the papers to him last week, around the 20th or so of March. I haven't heard from him as yet, I am trying to get him on the phone and see what he has come up with. That is our status as of now. I appreciate the support and concern of everyone who has emailed me, and for those of you who have requested information, I will keep you up to date as I know something. Thanks!

I had a minor problem with the same service. I bought their package 2 weeks ago but didn't receive anything. I called them back and they explained they had a backlog of orders the past few weeks and they shipped me a package the next day. They also told me to call them to schedule a phone call with a grant consultant to help me choose and fill grants applications. I'll let you know more once I talked to them again.

A few words of caution, I've been looking at grants for a while and I think you know it's a scam when a company says it's 100% certain you'll receive one. Before I bought my package I also made sure they had a 30 days refund policy. I'll let you know more once I have more contacts with them.

As far as I know, the guarantee they gave me didn't have a time limit, the $298 was refundable if you didn't receive a grant, although I am somewhat skeptical about anyone's refund policy. I still haven't been able to contact the person I was dealing with there, although I do have his fax number (a California area code, which I thought odd considering their main office is Florida, and the package came from Canada). We also decided to go ahead with our 501(c)(3) paperwork, should have it completed and sent off to the IRS in a week or so, not sure how long it will take to go through, from what I've heard it could be months. The problem we have is most of the foundations/organizations I have found that make grants require 501(c)(3) status letter from IRS, so if anyone knows of a place that will make grants to individuals to cover start-up costs for a scientific research facility studying alternative energy (especially with fuel costs up), I would greatly appreciate the information. Thanks again.

Here's some more feedback on my call with them.

I was a bit doubtfull at first but I've to admit I was pleased with my conversation with their people after the initial shipping problem.

They gave me an appointment with a grant advisor and the person walked me through the best programs for my needs. They also helped me with filling the forms. I sent the paper work to the appropriate agency and I'm awaiting an answer in a few weeks.

I also had time to talk about your case with the grant advisor. I didn't have much information about your business and personnal background but among other things they said to look into the Federal Office of Science Grants for your R&D energy project. You may apply for grants and contracts from this organization and get some needed cash flow to start your business.

If you call them they could also probably refer you to personnal grants which could help you financialy manage the first few months until you receive your IRS number. This ain't much but I hope this help.

Overall, I could have done this on my own but to me the price was worth the saved time looking for the right programs, not counting the trial and errors process.

    Wish you good luck.

    Hector

Finally was able to contact the correct person, and have a phone appointment for Wednesday. It seems the guy I had talked to before, who asked me to fax over my information, was not in a position to handle such matters, I don't know if he was overstepping his bounds or just trying too hard, but the impression I received from the customer service rep. I finally got through to was that this person was not one of their grant specialists. She set up the appointment for me, and was going to track down the faxes I had sent so my specialist would have them in front of him/her when he/she calls Wednesday, so we are keeping our fingers crossed that something good will come of all of this. Thanks again for all the support and information/advice, both here and from those of you who have emailed me!

    Hector,

I'm glad your experience with a grant specialist was better than mine. I had my phone consultation with them yesterday, and I was not impressed. The specialist I spoke with seemed to know less than I know about the process. He didn't give me any information that I didn't already have, other than which congressional district I live in, and I could have gotten that myself.

If I had it all to do over again, knowing what I know now, I would not waste the $300, as I am back to where I started, doing this all on my own again, but that's okay, I am not about to give up yet!

I have several agencies in mind to send the application form to, and I will be doing that hopefully today, tomorrow at the latest.

I wish the best for you, and hope your grant comes through soon.

Thanks again to everyone for all your assistance and support, both here and in email.

Antek: As I only just signed onto this forum, I am sorry that this post may be too late to really help you.
I have dealt with the grant application process for a number of years, as both a grant writer and an applicant for my own business, and as such have a lot of experience.

ANY "company" claiming that you are guaranteed to receive a grant, of any amount, is a scam. It is completely impossible for a third party to make such a claim = only the government agency or other grant-maker can determine who will be a sucessful recipient, and this only occurs after you have submitted an application and they have reviewed it.

As far as getting a refund, since you have already paid for this service, I reccommend applying for a refund as soon as possible. Generally, with debit especially but also with credit card, you have a very small window of time in which to take action (usually 30-60 days), after which you will be required to take formal legal action to retrieve your funds.

I'm sorry you have had a negative experience. I have participated in a similar type of assistance, and found the experience very positive. The company I dealt with was very helpful, and not only provided me with a list of programs I qualified for, but gave me the correct documents to apply as well as online and phone support. I was approved for two grants.

    Goodluck!
