Yeah, it is very important that you gauge the effectiveness of your marketing campaign in terms of the number of new prospective customers you are able to attract and not in terms of the amount of extra revenue that you drive in with this campaign. This is due to the reason that initially, the customers will only come in order to know more about your product and might not buy your product right away.

Yes, internet marketeers seem to forget that they need to also engage their potential customers, not just promote. You have to sell, that I agree on, but once you do that wouldn't it be nice to keep that customer engaged and make sure he returns for another purchase? By offering more than just advertising and products you create a powerful brand that sticks with people. Are websites with countless adverts and pop ups encouraging a sale successful? Not really! Users love a clean site that just once in a while promotes. They don't want to feel that they are just walking wallets.

I would have to agree that the first goal should be to retain the visitors they get. I always tell my clients the number 1 priority of their website isn't to rank in the search engines, it is to make the users so happy that they will go tell others about the site as well.

I think it's the best approach to any business or just any big decision in life, because it keeps your vision clear and this way you don't end up getting lost within all the details along the way. Setting small goals that build up to a larger overall goal is key to success without having to rely too much on luck.
