Guerilla marketing is inherently unconventional. When devising a traditional marketing strategy, a business would normally focus on promoting their product through advertising, price cuts, specific sales locations etc. The message is often focused on the product that is sold. It usually requires a lot of resources and strategic decision making.

Guerilla marketing focuses solely on creating 'buzz'. In a lot of examples, it is supposed to shock people, and make people curious, without it being a sales pitch. A good and often used example is a flash mob. Traditional marketing rules would disregard this as irrelevant to the overall strategy, as it does not focus on selling a product or brand. However, companies do it to start a conversation about their brand, and get media coverage that is relatively cheap. In that sense, it can be considered more PR than marketing.
