National newspapers (New York Times, Washington Post, etc.) make almost all of their money through advertising. It's essential to their continued success, and without it, they'd surely fail. With the size, circulation, and readership of national newspapers, they have a lot of upkeep costs. Their ad rates reflect that, which makes it difficult to advertise in any newspaper with a cross-country reach.

    Hi,

It depends upon your requirements like black and white or color ad, and text ad or text with image ad.

You could also try advertising in those newspapers that come free in your mail since it's a cheap option. The contain mostly commercials cleverly disguised as articles or interviews. Between them they add some jokes and crossword puzzles and people read them like mad. Buying an article about your business is more expensive but you can go for the cheaper option offered by regular ads.

Advertising in local newspapers is very common for local businesses. By this, they are able to create brand awareness and spread information about their products very easily amongst the targeted audience. The cost of advertising in newspapers depends upon a large number of factors as the OP mentions. So, a small corner in one of the middle pages generally costs quite less then a big-sized front page ad. I do know for a fact that color ads are more expensive then the ones in greyscale. And the newspapers generally have certain packages whereby your ad gets printed a particular number of times in a week/month, which is cheaper in comparison to separate daily ad.

The price you'll pay will depend on factors like the ad's size and color, the magazine's popularity, and the ad's placement in the magazine.
