Can anyone help me out? I've heard a lot about backlinks and how they are the "new thing" in the page ranking game. However, I am pretty much clueless about how they work or how to even do one. I would really appreciate some help. I try to learn something new every day... this would go straight to the top of my list.

No problem. A backlink is just a link from another web site to your web site. Think of it like a set of references in a book or an article. Google sees those as meaning you have content worth citing. The sites that link to you need to be relavant to your area of business and they need to be high quality sites. In other words you want to be a place people WANT TO reference because you have very high quality informative content.

The more the quality back-links you have stronger your ranking will be. To attain quality back-links you have arrange back links from different sources like blogs , directories , forum etc.

Doing back links is not that hard to learn. You will make some mistakes as you start. Once you get the basics down, you can get to the extra knowledge stuff. One thing you need to know is Back links do work, but it takes tremendous amount of time to have results.
