    Opinion on Marketing
    Hi everyone!

    This will be the first business for us to own, but the franchise that we are buying is a company I have worked for, for 14 years. I know the business like the back of my hand, just not the owning a business piece (I worked for the corporation). Where we are opening our franchise it is a "start up" territory, only starting with 9 clients. I will be solely focusing on the business while John is still working his current job. We will not hire any employees until we have enough to where I'm to busy to do it all. We have the opportunity to market for new customers prior to our official open date.

    Do you feel I/we should learn, have a solid understanding of owning the business/taxes/payroll/ etc prior to marketing and expanding? Or market right away, grow fast and learn as I/we go?

    I would always recommend marketing right away. Most marketing material is cast away upon receipt so it is a matter of repetition and constantly getting your business in front of potential customers. Start early and often to make your business a household name. This also allows time for word of mouth to benefit you.     If growing your business a priority for you, then I would start marketing right away. Marketing can take many forms but they all share this: the sooner you start, the sooner you start reaping the benefits. Be consistent with you message and advertise often. Until you're at a comfortable client base (aka, you're paying your bills and making a little profit), you can delay diving into those other things, but don't wait too long either (a few months should do it).

    I would recommend making sure you understand your business tax situation as well as any regulatory compliances that may affect your business. Are you a sole proprietor/partnership or a corporation? The volume of learning material can vary greatly depending on this. Payroll can generally wait until you actually need to hire an employee. You may want to consider using an Accountant, they will save you more money than they cost.

    I do like the learn as you go approach. But that's just me. I do often find myself working through problems.

    Note that marketing and sales are often confused. Marketing is about learning about your customer: who they are, what they like, how they are sold, etc. The more you can learn about your customer, the more efficient your business processes as a whole can be, especially sales.
