Linkbaiting is basically creating content which should get other content producers to link to it. It should increase the number of inbound links to some content and then improve its performance in search engine results. The most common linkbaiting tactics are creating titles that draw readers to the content and developing reciprocal relationships with other content producers, in which you share links to their content and they to yours.

I actually don't like the term "Link Bait" as it has a negative connotation these days. It was - as several replies have commented - the practice of creating really great, sticky, useful content that others would link to as a reference point.

The practice is still VERY valid, but the term itself needs to change --- especially with the onslaught of what are called "Click Bait" articles (the ones with the really "intriguing" headline that get you to click into an article that may or may not provide the payoff you were expecting.

I've heard Link Magnet being used by several folks in the industry, but - unfortunately - Link Bait is still the most common terminology.

Link Bait is providing valuable content on your website so that other websites will naturally reference/link to it without you ever having to ask. Linkable content can be anything from an in depth research project, to an evergreen guide, to a popular video

Link bait is content on your website that other sites link to because they want to, not because you ask them to. The most important element of link baiting is creating compelling content.
